Selection Criteria

1. Globally Significant

Projects that protect globally significant marine resources or establish significant policy precedents. International and national policies are the priority. Provincial projects with significant impacts may qualify.

2. Policy Outcomes

Projects with bold policy outcomes that build lasting political and government leadership. These projects will result in specific, impactful deliverables and may follow changes in governments when appropriate.

3. Time-Bound

An assessment regarding the likelihood of the policy objectives being achieved during the timeframe outlined in the proposal.

4. Collaborative

Projects can be collaborative in three main ways:

• Grantee(s) work in a coalition to collectively achieve the policy objectives
• Grantee(s) work in partnership with government(s)
• The project is co-funded including non-Oceans 5 members and public sources

5. Underserved Geographies

Underserved geographies, issues and communities. Projects in strategically important areas (Asia, Latin America, Africa, Indian Ocean, or Pacific Islands) which have been underserved by marine philanthropy and may coincide with areas of high biodiversity or ecological functions. Indigenous and coastal community led projects and issues that have received little attention also qualify.
